Pervez Musharraf is a name that is synonymous with the history of Pakistan. The former president of the country, he was a key figure in the tumultuous years leading up to and during the War on Terror. As such, his legacy is one that is worth exploring in greater detail. In doing so, it is possible to gain a better understanding of his life and times, as well as the impact that his actions had on the country.

Early Life

Pervez Musharraf was born in August 1943 in Delhi, India. His family moved to Pakistan shortly after its independence in 1947, settling in Karachi. After completing his schooling there, he attended the prestigious Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul, where he was one of the top graduates. He went on to serve in the Pakistan Army, rising to the rank of general and becoming the country’s youngest-ever Chief of Army Staff in 1998. He also served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.

The Coup and Presidency

In October 1999, Musharraf seized power in a bloodless coup and declared himself the President of Pakistan. He declared a state of emergency and suspended the country’s constitution, ruling by decree for the next several years. He also set up the National Security Council, which he used to control the government. During this time he was widely criticized for his heavy-handed tactics and for cracking down on dissent.

Political Reforms

Musharraf did make some efforts to bring about political reforms during his time in office. He introduced a new set of local government rules and regulations, which aimed to decentralize power away from the central government and give it to local leaders. He also liberalized the economy, privatizing several state-run enterprises and encouraging foreign investment. He also improved relations with India and the United States, allowing for better economic ties and even military cooperation.

The War on Terror

Musharraf’s most lasting legacy, however, is his role in the War on Terror. In 2001, he offered the United States access to Pakistan’s airbases in order to launch attacks against Afghanistan. He also allowed American drones to operate in Pakistani airspace and supported the US-led efforts to combat terrorism in the region. This caused considerable controversy in the country, with many Pakistanis criticizing him for allowing the US to use Pakistani soil as a staging ground for its operations.

Later Life and Death

Musharraf resigned as president in 2008 and went into self-imposed exile in Dubai. He returned to Pakistan in 2013 to stand trial for various criminal charges, including treason, but was ultimately acquitted. He died in May 2021 at the age of 77, after a brief illness. His death sparked a wave of mourning in the country, with many Pakistanis recognizing his role in the country’s history.

Legacy

Pervez Musharraf’s legacy is one that is mixed. While he is widely credited with improving the country’s economy and relations with foreign countries, he is also remembered for his heavy-handed tactics and for allowing the US to operate in Pakistani airspace. Nevertheless, he is remembered as an important figure in Pakistan’s history and his life and times will be remembered for years to come.
